Shingles Shots Now Free If You Have Medicare

Seniors can now save on Shingles vaccinations thanks to changes made to Medicare in the Inflation Reduction Act

Good news, the Inflation Reduction Act that was passed in 2022 will help seniors save on medical care.

One key change that shingles vaccines are now free for those with Medicare. Most vaccinations are free if you have Medicare. One key omission has been the Shingles vaccine, which in the past cost between $150-200. In 2021 Medicare beneficiaries spent $230 million on shingles shots alone. I know we have had several clients of ours who were putting off getting vaccinated because of the cost, and there’s probably millions of seniors nationally. After January 1st, 2023, shingles vaccinations will now be free.

If you’re wondering about how your insurance will factor in, rest assured it should make no difference. Whether you have traditional Medicare, a Medicare Advantage Plan, or a Supplement, treatment should still be no cost. Additionally there should be no difference between insurance companies, so whether you have UnitedHealthcare, or Humana, or Anthem, etc, treatment should be no cost. Just remember to seek care from an in-network provider for your plan.

We recommend talking to your doctor about your needs and risks before seeking treatment, but at least now the price shouldn’t be a factor in your decision to get the shingles vaccine.
